In Which Group Of Animals Would She Find The Most Diversity

Do you know what the largest and well-nigh diverse group within the beast kingdom is?  Arthropods, known for their segmented body parts, out number all the rest!  This grouping includes insects, arachnids, myriapods and crustaceans.

A Texas Redheaded Centipede is spotted at Lake Arrowhead State Park .

Out of this group, "myriapod" which means "many legs" is the subphylum which contains 1 very interesting creature that I happen to come across at Lake Arrowhead Country Park.

While on a nature hike, our group happened upon a fluctuant, brightly colored critter that crossed the trail.  We squatted downward to take a closer look and discovered information technology was indeed a Texas Redheaded Centipede (Scolopendra heros).

Quickly, I snapped a photo and added it to the iNaturalist app so that we could document its existence.  As of today, there has only been 1 verified sighting in Wichita Canton and 2 in Clay County.  That doesn't hateful that they aren't out there, but not verified with photos on the website.

Maybe this is because no one wants to get too shut to these critters!  They are known to take a painful pinch.  Forth with its 21 to 23 pairs of legs, this item centipede has appendages known as gnathopods that will inject venom in their prey that can cause instant pain in its victim.  They are very constructive predators and volition feed on lizards, frogs, rodents, insects, and sometimes flying critters.

Yes, that's right!  They tin can even attain into the air to snatch a non-suspecting victim.  Just like almost crawling critters, they are not usually interested in people as prey:  yous can breathe a sigh of relief, they are non out to get us!  With their aposematic coloring, you go a "warning" to stay away.  The centipede unremarkably has a bright red head, orange legs, and a dark-green-black body and tail, although there are variations in unlike locations.

Even though they advertise "stay away," it tin be difficult for a naturalist to not pause for a look at this brilliantly colored critter.  Since they stay underground and out of sunlight virtually of the fourth dimension, they sometimes can be seen if it's a cloudy day, which is how I found this one at the park.

For such a commanding looking critter, I plant that they have a "soft" side to their personality.  The mothers will lay eggs and surround them with her body to protect the eggs while she spends time grooming the eggs to continue mold or bacteria from harming them.

Whether they are frightening potential casualty or nurturing their eggs, they fill an important niche in the ecosystem.  It was an crawly care for to go a rare glimpse and send information technology on its way!
